RNC Avionics strongly invests in Research and Development as a mechanism to bring new and potentially market disruptive products, as well as to reinforce the company’s intellectual property.

We adopt the open innovation paradigm and work closely with an extensive network of recognised leading experts, including universities, research laboratories and international study groups. Over the past years, we invested more than £1 million in R&D activities.  Our expertise and competences were recognised in several grants awarded by UK and European bodies.

GAMMA (FP7)

The GAMMA project (http://www.gamma-project.eu) developed solutions to emerging air traffic management vulnerabilities backed up by practical proposals for the implementation of these solutions. The project considered as well new scenarios created by the Single European Sky programme.

To reach these goals, GAMMA first performed a comprehensive assessment of the full set of security threats and vulnerabilities affecting the existing ATM system, considering this as a ‘system of systems’ and covering operational as well as technological aspects. This analysis provided the basis to develop a security management framework, a concrete proposal for the day-to-day operation of air traffic management security. It also defined the requirements and architecture of a security solution that will include the ability to manage incidents and crises spreading throughout the system.

RNC applied its expertise in advanced mathematics and machine learning to develop discrete predictive algorithms in complex multi-variable system for the definition, development, optimization and implementation of advanced algorithms for qualitative and quantitative assessment of security levels in ATM, with corresponding confidence metrics.  RNC work allowed to identify main vulnerabilities areas and security audit prioritisations.

GAMMA has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement nr. 312382
